Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning

It's almost holiday party season and it's always nice to bring your host or hostess a gift. Here's an easy one you can whip up in a jiffy. Be sure to keep some for yourself too. Making your own spice mixtures is a great way to reduce sodium and to control the ingredients that are going into your food. Take this basic recipe and multiply it by the number of servings you'd like to make. About 2 heap tablespoons of the mixture is a good amount to make a batch of tacos.

  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp kosher or sea salt If salt is an issue for you, reduce the salt and try adding the juice of half-a-lime to your meat mixture at the very end to enhance the flavour
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • *If you prefer spicy also add 1/8 tsp of cayenne pepper

  • In a bowl combine the following and mix really well.
  • Pour the mixture into small jars and write a tag with the instructions of adding 2 heaping tablespoons to your meat along with 2/3 cup of cold water and simmer until reduced.
