Q: I want to make guacamole in a few days, but the grocery store only has hard avocados! What should I do? Alternatively, what if it’s the other way around and they ripen too soon?
This is a great question because if you’ve got guacamole, or any other avocado recipe on the menu, you’ll want perfectly ripe avocados on the day that you need them. Here are some simple avocado rules to follow.
If they are not ripe enough:
Put them in a paper bag on the counter at room temperature.
Store them near other fruits that emit high levels of ethylene such as peaches, apples or bananas.
You can even put one of these high ethylene fruits in the paper bag with the avocados to help stimulate ripening.
If you want to preserve them and slow ripening:
Once they are at the ripeness that you want them to be, simply pop them in the fridge and they’ll halt their ripening process buying you a few extra days of perfection!
