Poppy Post September 2019

Cherries Baby!

Cherries are a great source of fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Namely potassium, calcium, vitamin A and folic acid. They’re also great for providing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds to the body.

Cherries have also been shown to be beneficial for people suffering from arthritis, gout, insomnia, and for post-workout aches and pains. Fresh is best when they’re in season but you can still get the health benefits if the cherries are frozen, powdered, are squeezed into 100% juice, or are in a dried form that is preservative free.

We love cherries because of their versatility in the kitchen, and here are a few great recipes from our Poppy Innovations Recipe Box to try:

Sweet Apple Cider Baby Beets!

Here’s a great way to preserve the beet bounty! Beet salads are increasingly more popular so why not make your own! Beets complement the flavours of arugula, nutty parmesan and earthy walnuts. Recipe adapted from the book Tart and Sweet.

Here’s your shopping list: *Tip – local farmers markets have great deals on beets this time of year. Check out the Saskatoon Farm as they often have ‘fill a bag’ specials during harvest time and ‘you-pick’ opportunities.

Ingredients:
5 pounds baby beets scrubbed
2 cups apple cider vinegar
1 cup water
2 Tbsp kosher salt
2 Tbsp brown sugar or honey

Per Jar:
½ tsp allspice berries
¼ tsp black peppercorns
1 star anise pod
½ cinnamon stick

We are exited to announce a new partnership with a wonderful organization and facility, the YWCA Calgary located in Inglewood. Poppy Innovations will be offering classes out of this location. Watch our schedule for exciting events including date nights, a seniors program and more.
