Poppy Innovations is a social enterprise offering business consulting with a twist. At Poppy Innovations, we offer a range of community development and business consulting services to help organizations and associations with their strategic planning, business plans, managing projects and interim executive management. But we don’t talk much about our consulting on this website (although we clearly love to get new clients)! Rather, we talk about our social impact and the need for empowering Calgarians to change the way they eat. The reason? To bring about awareness and to change the trajectory of the health epidemic that has reached sweeping proportions over the last 30 years in Canada; the prevalence of overweightness and obesity. We believe the most effective solution is to work with government and like-minded organizations to inspire change in the way we eat by offering programs to support the mission.
Being a social enterprise means that Poppy Innovations prioritizes people over profit. In 2018-2019, we provided 5% of our consulting revenue and partnered with other organizations to support food skills and nutrition programs for children and adults in Calgary. Educating people in our community with the skills and knowledge needed to make good, wholesome food and healthy choices is an excellent investment in cultivating the potential of Calgarians. Our programs and classes teach adults, children, and families to grow and harvest their own produce, can and preserve, and to cook meals that are both healthy and delicious. These cooking programs including “Cooking with Colours” and “Parent & Child Culinary Class” are available in southeast Calgary and our Edible Education program for schools is available across Calgary. For our adult and teen crowd, we offer Gate to Plate Cooking Classes that focus on cooking from scratch to create wholesome, real food as well as Canning and Preserving Classes to enable people to eat seasonal foods year round. For those interested in growing their own food, we have a community garden in De Winton with plots for lease to serve residents in Calgary, De Winton, and Okotoks.
At Poppy Innovations we are strongly committed to promoting and supporting healthy kids and healthy families. After all, we know that our communities are healthier when we all eat well!
