Poppy Post August 2019

Totally Rad Radishes!

These small packages pack a punch! Radishes are home to many nutrients including vitamin A, C, E, B6, and potassium. Radishes also are high in fibre and can help to control blood pressure and safe guard your heart as they are a source of anthocyanins.

As Albertans living in a dry climate, radishes are actually great for your skin too as they contain phosphorus and zinc in addition to their Vitamin C content. If you’re someone who likes to use a juicer, add some radishes into the mix to to help keep skin dryness away.

With their crunchy, peppery bite, radishes are in season, super delicious, and ready to eat. Buy a bunch next time you’re at the market and use these ideas to incorporate them into your diet.

Here are 3 super radish recipes to try from Poppy Innovations:

Attention Teachers!

We know! You’re on a well deserved holiday right now but we wanted to plant the seed. Book a session of Edible Education for your students next year. We’ve got lessons that deliver hands-on nutrition and gardening education while making key circular connections for Grades 1 through 6. We believe in changing the way we eat to combat the rise in childhood obesity through education and empowerment on the topic of healthy eating.

Eating In Season

There are many benefits to eating ‘In Season’ and as Canadians, you’ve got to deal with a bit of a shorter window of time to make your choices count.

Reason #1 – In season produce just tastes better! It’s fresher, sweeter, and perfectly ripe because they are picked at a time of year where they’ve had a chance to naturally grow and ripen.

Reason #2 – You can save money! And that’s always a good thing. Because these crops are in abundance at specific times of year the cost of it goes down. As well, local, seasonal produce does not have to travel as far to reach the market, which means lower prices for you.

Reason #3 – The environment. When you make seasonal choices, you’re helping to reduce the demand for out of season produce, which means less hot houses, refrigeration, and fuel to transport those foods grown in far away places.

With all of that in mind, here is this month’s shopping list:

Apples – Apricots – Artichokes – Beans – Blueberries – Broccoli – Cabbage – Carrots – Cauliflower – Celery – Cherries – Corn – Cucumbers – Eggplant – Lettuce – Peas – Peppers – Potatoes – Raspberries – Rhubarb – Saskatoons – Strawberries – Spinach – Tomatoes –  Zucchini – Various Herbs

This crew ran, played, cooked, tried new things, and took home skills for life! They were a fantastic group of kids who were a pleasure to teach.
